Research in Svalbard (RiS)
All research projects in Svalbard should register in the Research in Svalbard (RiS) portal.
The Research in Svalbard (RiS) portal has open access to relevant information in one place. It is a valuable tool for everybody involved in research, fieldwork and monitoring in Svalbard.
If you have a registered research project, you can use the portal to submit applications and reports to the Governor of Svalbard and book services in Ny-Ålesund through Kings Bay and their local station.
The portal is open to anyone who would like to search among registered projects without needing to create an account. Project participants om the other hand will need to register and have a dedicated user and password. They can also enter data from their own projects. Project leaders will on their part be granted the highest access level, allowing them to register research projects and apply for relevant permissions.
You must register all research projects requiring permission pursuant to the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act or notification pursuant to the regulations relating to tourism and other travel in Svalbard. If not, projects which will be carried out in Ny-Ålesund or Hornsund, because applications and bookings are not accepted if they come from outside the portal.
Svalbard-related research projects receiving funding from the Research Council of Norway or the Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund are also required to register via RiS.
All other research projects with a connection to Svalbard are highly encouraged to register their projects. This also includes projects in the surrounding Svalbard waters.
