Research in Svalbard (RiS)

All research projects in Svalbard should register in the Research in Svalbard (RiS) portal.

The Research in Svalbard (RiS) portal offers open access to all relevant information in one place. It is a valuable tool for coordination and cooperation for those carrying out research, fieldwork and monitoring in Svalbard.

In the RiS portal, registered projects can submit applications and reports to the Governor of Svalbard and book services in Ny-Ålesund through Kings Bay and their local station.

The portal provides open access to anyone who would like to search among registered projects without creating an account. Project participants will need to register and have a dedicated user and password, and they may enter data from their own projects, whereas project leaders will be granted the highest access level, allowing them to register research projects and apply for relevant permissions.

You must register all research projects requiring permission pursuant to the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act or notification pursuant to the regulations relating to tourism and other travel in Svalbard; or projects which will be carried out in Ny-Ålesund or Hornsund, because applications and bookings are not accepted if they come from outside the portal. Svalbard-related research projects receiving funding from the Research Council of Norway or the Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund are also required to register via RiS.

All other research projects with a connection to Svalbard are highly encouraged to register their projects, also projects in the surrounding Svalbard waters.

Visit the RiS portal at www.researchinsvalbard.no to search for research activities and to register and update projects.
