Doing research in Svalbard requires that you adhere to a special set of regulations and take suitable precautions.
Passport required, but no visa
Svalbard is Norwegian territory, but is outside Schengen. Thus there is no need for a visa to visit or travel within Svalbard (including the Russian settlement). However, all non-Norwegian citizens must show their passports when leaving mainland Norway en route to Svalbard and on returning from the archipelago.
