Joint European Programmes (JPIs)
Norwegian researchers, actors in the business sector and the public sector, can apply for project funding through joint European calls in which Norway participates, called Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs). The joint calls for proposals are usually based on various thematic challenges. In order to apply, Norwegian participants must collaborate with partners from other countries. Healthy and Productive Oceans (JPI Oceans) addresses the challenges facing European seas and oceans. Norway heads the secretariat for this joint programme.

The purpose of the Joint Programme Climate (JPI Climate - Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe) is to compile knowledge and coordinate European climate research.

Urban Europe (JPI URBAN EUROPE - Global urban challenges, joint European solutions) deals with social, business and environmental challenges in urban development.

The joint programme Water Challenges for a Changing World addresses challenges related to increasingly stressed freshwater resources.

Food and health (JPI A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life) looks at the connections between food production, diet and lifestyle-related disorders.

Neurodegenerative diseases (JPI Neurodegenerative Disease Research) is the largest global research effort aimed at neurodegenerative diseases.

The Joint Programme Cultural Heritage and Global Change (JPI Cultural Heritage and Global Change, a new challenge for Europe) coordinates activities within cultural heritage for sustainable use and management.

ERA-NET is a programme collaboration that covers a number of areas. ERA-NET is co-financed by the EU's Horizon 2020 framework programme. You will find joint calls for proposals among the Research Council's calls, search for ERA.
The research authorities are also collaborating on a Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET) to accelerate the development of low-carbon technology. You can find more information about funding schemes on the European Commission's information page on this.
Cooperation between European countries on research programmes (Joint Programming Initiatives, JPIs) and cooperation between European countries' research programmes (ERA-NET) will better coordinate publicly funded research in Europe and create a European Research Area. These thematic joint calls are intended to coordinate data and expertise across the countries and produce research of high scientific quality. The Research Council participates in all ten JPIs and a large number of ERA-NETs. Each country finances its own share of participation in the cooperation.
