Cooperation outside the EU/EEA
The Research Council has entered into bilateral cooperation agreements with a number of countries. These agreements lay a foundation for many funding opportunities for Norwegian researchers.
Japan
Priority topics: Energy and environment; Space and polar research; Nanotechnology and new materials; Marine research; Health, care, and welfare technology.
We have signed a so-called Money Follows Cooperation Agreement with the Japan Agency for Science and Technology (JST). Read more about the agreement here: How does Money Follows Cooperation work? (forskningradet.no).
We have an agreement with JSPS on the exchange of two postdoctoral fellowships annually. The Research Council is a member of the European network European Interest Group (EIG) CONCERT-Japan for STI cooperation between European countries and Japan.

Canada
There is considerable collaboration between Canadian and Norwegian researchers in several fields. Keywords: Northern areas and polar research, fisheries and aquaculture, oil and gas, environment and climate.
USA
For Norway, the USA is the largest and most important single country for international R&D cooperation outside Europe. Topics: Climate and polar research, environment, security, health, energy, biological diversity, space research and social sciences.

India
The research collaboration has so far focused on several topics, with calls within e.g. energy, climate/environment, polar research, health, social sciences and humanities, ICT and nanotechnology. In line with the Government's India Strategy from 2019, priority areas will be ocean space, energy, climate/environment, global health, and social sciences

Current topics: climate, environment and environmental technology, energy, aquaculture, agriculture, polar research, social sciences, and humanities. Since 2018, the Research Council has carried out annual joint calls with the Chinese R&D authorities. The topics are anchored in the Joint Action Plan, which is an agreement between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology, and this is regularly renegotiated.

South Korea
Particularly relevant topics: Digital enabling technologies, renewable energy, nanotechnology, hydrogen technology and energy storage, smart health. The Research Council signed an MoU with NRF (National Research Foundation of Korea) in 2017 and a "Money Follows Cooperation" agreement with KETEP (Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning) in South Korea in 2019.
