The nationwide citizen science project for schools

The nationwide citizen science project for schools (Forskningskampanjen) invites pupils aged 6-19 years to help researchers to carry out a research project.

Thousands of pupils help to collect and enter data, making it possible to conduct large-scale studies that otherwise would be very difficult to complete. Pupils who participate gain experience in how to carry out research and insight into various scientific methods.

The project targets a new research topic each year.

Organised every autumn

The Research Council organises the nationwide citizen science project each autumn during National Science Week in Norway. We collaborate with the University of Bergen’s Norwegian Environmental Education Network and a different group of researchers each year. Approximately 15 000 pupils from all over Norway participate.

Examples of past projects

Pupils have taken part in studying many issues, including recording where the rubber infill used in artificial turf ends up, mapping the distribution of different earthworm species, measuring indoor temperatures at home, logging the contents of their lunch sacks and studying language and dialect use.
