IPY-Norway
The Norwegian Polar Institute and the Research Council of Norway are planning Norwegian participation and preparations for the fifth International Polar Year (IPY) 2032–2033.

Work organisation
The Government has given its approval to Norwegian participation in the Fifth International Polar Year (IPY), which is scheduled for 2032–2033. This is in line with Norway's management responsibility over Norwegian territory and strategic interests in polar areas.
The Norwegian Polar Institute and the Research Council of Norway have been tasked by the Ministry of Education and Research and the Ministry of Climate and Environment with preparing for the next International Polar Year.
The Research Council will be responsible for the national organisation and coordination of Norway's efforts, and will establish a national IPY secretariat. The Norwegian Polar Institute will chair a scientific IPY committee with key representatives from the polar research community in Norway.
A preliminary national planning committee was established in the autumn of 2024. During 2025, we will establish a national IPY secretariat and establish a mandate and composition for the IPY committee. After that, there will be a build-up and start-up in 2026.
